All inmates’ records are open to the public as attested by the Idaho Public Records Law Manual and the Idaho Public Records Act.
How do I find an inmate in Idaho?
Idaho inmate search can be performed by using the Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) offender search database. The function operates to serve the public with information about Idaho inmates currently under the Department’s jurisdiction. Besides inmates who are incarcerated, on probation, or on parole, it also provides a list of felony convictions that an inmate serves time for.
If an individual specifically wants to find an inmate with sex offender records, such as sexual assault, sexual abuse, etc. they can utilize the Idaho Sex Offender Registry option on the Idaho State Police (ISP) website.
Finding an inmate in county jail
Most small county jails will need individuals to directly contact the County Sheriff’s Office for their inmate lists, this includes Bannock County, Owyhee County, Bonner County, and more. However, county jails with larger inmate populations will most likely use an online inmate locator or provide a jail inmate list on their website. For instance, the top county jails in Idaho based on inmate populations are Ada County Jail, Canyon County Jail, and Kootenai County Jail.
Ada County Jail
This county has a maximum capacity of 1224 and an average of more than 860 daily inmate count. With the huge amount of inmate population ranging from minimum to maximum security level, Ada County Idaho inmate search option can be conducted by only providing the first letter of the inmate’s last name on their inmate roster.
Canyon County Jail
Currently housing around 376 inmates out of 523 inmates at maximum capacity, this county jail is the second most populated county jail in Idaho. The county’s website provides a Jail Roster to help individual narrow down the inmate list under their arrest by entering the offender’s name or by clicking on the letters and search by the last name. The roster list will include all detainees currently housed in Canyon County Jail and the Canyon County Work Release Center.
Kootenai County Jail
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office offers a different approach for the public to find inmates within their custody. Instead of using a jail roster or an offender search feature, the Kootenai County Jail provides an In-Custody Report section for its users. This includes the complete current list of inmates, wanted felony report, wanted misdemeanor report, and daily press log.
