The Montana Department of Corrections (MDOC) is in charge of all Montana state prison and any correctional facility run by the state, which, aside from current people under arrest, also include former prisoners who are on parole or probation throughout the state of Montana. Where are Montana inmates housed?
Montana prisoners are housed in prisons and community correction centers under the administration of the Department of Corrections. The adult prison systems consist of four adult male prisons, one adult female prison, and 11 community corrections centers all over Montana. Montana County Jail
Aside from state prisons, sentenced offenders will also be housed in county jail, city jail, and police department jail. These facilities will be under the administration of local law enforcement agencies or other municipalities. Although the inmate populations in county jails are not as large as state prisons, some of them are still well known for housing an admirable number of inmates at a time. Yellowstone County Jail
The Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Mike Linder, is in charge of this detention facility. Currently, this detention facility is housing around 470 inmates at a medium-security level. Individuals can find an incarcerated person in the detention center by using their inmate search tool.
Missoula County Jail
This Montana jail houses detainees that have been found guilty of a misdemeanor crime and have a sentenced time of less than a year and people who have been accused of a crime and are awaiting trial. Having an average of 250 detainees a day, the Missoula Sheriff’s Office is in charge of its management while supervised by Sheriff T. J. McDermott. An individual can use the provided inmate roster on the county’s website to obtain an offender record.
Gallatin County Jail
Located in the city of Bozeman, Montana, this detention center holds an average of 150 inmates a day. It is managed by the Sheriff’s Office and currently overseen by Sheriff Brian Gootkin. From the county’s website, individuals can search for an inmate using their jail roster.
How do you contact an inmate in Montana?
Any person can contact the prisoner housed in Montana state prison through the mail, except for victims of crime. The inmate is allowed to receive and send as many letters as they want, however, for outgoing letters, they need to pay the postage themselves by buying the necessary items from the commissary. Both parties need to abide by the mailing rules outlined by the Department of Correction at all times.
Mails sent to an inmate must contain the following information:
- Sender’s full name and complete return address
- Inmate’s full name and DOC identification number
- Pre-stamped envelopes

In August 2020, MDOC recently introduced an emailing platform for prisoners in Montana State Prison, although currently this method only applied to certain facilities, MDOC hopes to expand the feature to all correctional centers.
In order to use the email service by Edovo, an inmate must initiate an invitation to an individual which will be sent directly to the person’s email. The individual will have a choice whether to accept or block the invite. If they choose to proceed with the emailing services, individuals can purchase packages offered by Edovo. These plans will help individuals to proceed with the email process.
An inmate can make outgoing calls to an individual outside of the facility, but not the other way around. The telephone usage for each facility may vary from another, therefore individuals should be aware of it before purchasing any prepaid calls.
If the friend and family of an inmate want to receive a call from a detainee, they must accept the charges of each call or set up an account with the telephone provider associated with the inmate’s facility. When the inmate is calling, they will it will notify the callee and will be given four routes to go with:
- Accept the call
- Refuse the call
- Block calls from the facility
- Get a rate quote for the call

How do you find out the release date of an inmate in Montana?
By using the Offender Search tool on the Montana DOC website, anyone can look up the basic inmate records of current prisoners. To use this tool, the person needs to provide either the inmate’s DOC identification number or the inmate’s full name. The records of an inmate will be shown including their release date. If no information is available, there is a high chance that the facility has not updated the latest data. So, an inmate can proceed with contacting the facility of interest directly to request records.
Can I send a care package to an inmate in Montana?
Inmates are not allowed to receive packages directly from family members or friends. However, the sender can opt to order pre-approved care packages item sold at third-party vendors that are by the facility.
What can you send inmates in Montana prisons?
Sending mail to an inmate in Montana
People are allowed to send mails to Montana prisoners as long as they abide by the rules and procedures prepared by the Montana Department of Corrections.
- All incoming mails should always include a legitimate return address of the sender. If no return address is written on the envelope, mail will not be delivered and will be discarded instead.
- All incoming mails will be opened, read, and inspected by the detention officer for any content that violates the rule or could cause harm to anyone.
- Letters containing escape plans, weapon-building instructions, messages, etc. are highly prohibited and will result in disciplinary actions taken to both.
Aside from letters, photos can also be sent to an inmate given that it does not exceed the size 8.5”x11”. Only 5 pictures can be sent in one mail, and it should not be instant nor Polaroid. For greeting cards, as long as the maximum size is capped at 8”x10”, and is not electronic or heavily decorated and embellished, then it will pass the inspection.
Sending money to an inmate in Montana
Not everyone can send money to a Montana state inmate, the list of people are:
- Immediate family members listed on the inmate’s visiting list
- One non-family member who has been approved in the visiting list, and has permission by the facility warden or a person designated by the warden himself.
Before an individual can proceed with the fund deposit, they will first need to know a few information about the inmate:
- Name of inmate
- DOC ID Number of Inmate
- Current Housing Facility of Inmate
Individuals are presented with two ways of depositing money into a prisoner’s account.
An individual can deposit money using a cashier’s check or US Postal money order. The money order needs to be filled including the full name and return address of the sender, the full name of the inmate and their ID number, and the address of the facility currently housing the inmate. The fund needs to arrive within 20 days of the money order purchase.
Alternatively, family members of an inmate can send money into the commissary account of an offender through the Montana inmate online banking service, which only allows $250 maximum per deposit. To use this service an individual needs to set up an ePass account first.
How do I apply for Visitation of an inmate in Montana?
Individuals who are interested to visit an inmate will be required to fill the Visiting Form on the MDOC website. For victim or family members of victim that wishes to visit an inmate, they will need to tick the box at the top of the form. The completed form should be mailed to the following address:

The processing of the application may take up to 3 months from the day the application was received. The facility will run a background check on inmates to verify the information filled in the form. The status of the application will be informed to the inmate and it will be their responsibility to inform the approved visitor.
If an individual receives the approval for visitation, they will be required to set up an account with CenturyLink in order to schedule a physical or virtual video visit. What are the Visitation rules?
All visitors must fully agree to comply with the visiting rules and guidelines during the visit. The following are just some basic rules that will be applied when a visitor arrives at the facility:
- Visitors will need to show valid photo identification prior to the visit.
- The adult accompanying a minor must also show the proof of identification for the minor, which is their birth certificate.
- All visitors must follow the dress code when visiting the facility.
Upon arrival, visitors will be subjected to a security check. If an individual fails to cooperate with facility staff, the visitation privilege may be suspended, and the visitor may be asked to leave.
