Inmates are allowed to receive care packages from friends or family through mails or during visitation, given that they are not on a negative correspondence or negative vendor list. However, each New York state prison will be different, so individuals should contact the respective facility to get more information.
Each month a prisoner may receive two food packages weighing not more than 35 pounds. The two-packages food limit includes both from mails and visitation. Additionally, inmates may receive non-food items that would not be counted against the food-package limit. The sender can check the NY DOCCS allowable item list before sending any packages. Although non-food packages will not be limited, an inmate, however, does have a limit on how much personal property an offender may keep depending on physical and programmatic considerations.
Unfortunately, inmates housed in Special Housing Units (SHU) may not have the privilege to receive packages. While, prisoners located in one of the following “TV Facilities” are only allowed two food-packages per year, inclusive of packages from third-party vendors. These packages may contain only food items and must never exceed 20 pounds.
