Open the Offender Search

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) runs a public search called Offender Search. You can search by last name alone or first and last name, offender number, county of commitment, or next parole board hearing month.

  • It shows people incarcerated in an Ohio prison now, under department supervision, or judicially released.
  • A last name search for Brown also finds Browning and Browner.

The number to write down is the offender number. You will need it to send money or mail, to set up calls and visits, and to find the same person again.

Ohio state prisons we list

We do not copy the Ohio prison inmate list yet. These are the state prisons in our Ohio directory, with address, phone and visiting basics. Use the department's search above to find a person.

State prison, county jail or federal prison?

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction holds people serving state prison sentences. Someone arrested in the last few days is almost always in a county jail instead, and will not show up in the state prison search yet. For a recent arrest, start with the county: open our Ohio page and pick the county where the arrest happened.

People sentenced for federal crimes are held by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which has its own search. See federal inmate search (BOP).

Questions

What do I need to search the ODRC inmate list?

The Offender Search lets you search by last name alone or first and last name, offender number, county of commitment, or next parole board hearing month. A full legal name or the ID number works best.

Someone was just arrested in Ohio. Will they be in the ODRC search?

Usually not. People who were just arrested are held in a county jail first. They are moved to a state prison only after a sentence to state prison. Check the county jail where the arrest happened.

Is searchinmates.org part of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction?

No. searchinmates.org is a private website. It is not affiliated with the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction or any government agency. The department's own search is the source of record.
