Open the Inmate and Supervisee Locator

The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) runs a public search called Inmate and Supervisee Locator. You can search by first and last name, or DOC ID number, with optional location, gender and age range.

  • It covers people in state correctional facilities and people supervised in the community.
  • It is updated daily.

The number to write down is the DOC ID number. You will need it to send money or mail, to set up calls and visits, and to find the same person again.

Virginia state prisons we list

We do not copy the Virginia prison inmate list yet. These are the state prisons in our Virginia directory, with address, phone and visiting basics. Use the department's search above to find a person.

State prison, county jail or federal prison?

The Virginia Department of Corrections holds people serving state prison sentences. Someone arrested in the last few days is almost always in a county jail instead, and will not show up in the state prison search yet. For a recent arrest, start with the county: open our Virginia page and pick the county where the arrest happened.

People sentenced for federal crimes are held by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which has its own search. See federal inmate search (BOP).

Questions

What do I need to search the VADOC inmate list?

The Inmate and Supervisee Locator lets you search by first and last name, or DOC ID number, with optional location, gender and age range. A full legal name or the ID number works best.

Someone was just arrested in Virginia. Will they be in the VADOC search?

Usually not. People who were just arrested are held in a county jail first. They are moved to a state prison only after a sentence to state prison. Check the county jail where the arrest happened.

Is searchinmates.org part of the Virginia Department of Corrections?

No. searchinmates.org is a private website. It is not affiliated with the Virginia Department of Corrections or any government agency. The department's own search is the source of record.
