Open the Offender Search (Prisons)

The West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation (WV DCR) runs a public search called Offender Search (Prisons). You can search by Offender ID (OID) number, or last and first name.

  • It covers people in prison or on parole under active supervision.
  • People who discharged or left the division's custody do not appear.

The number to write down is the Offender ID (OID) number. You will need it to send money or mail, to set up calls and visits, and to find the same person again.

West Virginia state prisons we list

We do not copy the West Virginia prison inmate list yet. These are the state prisons in our West Virginia directory, with address, phone and visiting basics. Use the department's search above to find a person.

State prison, county jail or federal prison?

The West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation holds people serving state prison sentences. Someone arrested in the last few days is almost always in a county jail instead, and will not show up in the state prison search yet. For a recent arrest, start with the county: open our West Virginia page and pick the county where the arrest happened.

People sentenced for federal crimes are held by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which has its own search. See federal inmate search (BOP).

Questions

What do I need to search the WV DCR inmate list?

The Offender Search (Prisons) lets you search by Offender ID (OID) number, or last and first name. A full legal name or the ID number works best.

Someone was just arrested in West Virginia. Will they be in the WV DCR search?

Usually not. People who were just arrested are held in a county jail first. They are moved to a state prison only after a sentence to state prison. Check the county jail where the arrest happened.

Is searchinmates.org part of the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation?

No. searchinmates.org is a private website. It is not affiliated with the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation or any government agency. The department's own search is the source of record.
